Our Story

Adam's sin in Genesis chapter 3 brought corruption to the entire world along with sin and spiritual death.

Consequently, every medical illness is connected to Adam’s original sin. This includes mild skin rashes, infections, high blood pressure, chronic pain, heart attacks, cancer, and mental illness.  We all possess bodies that are imperfect and corruptible. 

Personal sin is any choice against God's righteous standards.  However, living with a corruptible body is different from personal sin.  Mental illness is often due to factors outside our control and not a deliberate act against God.    

Our brain is perhaps the most complex and intricately designed organ in our bodies.  It contains 100 billion nerves that communicate through trillions of different connections.  There are at least one million reasons why our brains may not function properly.  Genetics, trauma, stress, aging, injury, malnutrition, and substance abuse are just a few factors that can lead to problems within our brains. 

There is no shame in taking psychiatric medications. In fact, the Bible advocates for the use of medicine.

Ezekiel 47:12b says, “They will bear every month because their water flows from the sanctuary, and their fruit will be for food and their leaves for healing.”

Luke 10:33-34 says, "But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.”

Medicine for the human brain is no less important than medicine for the rest of our bodies.  In fact, due to the brain's vital role in all human functions, it's probably much more important!  And it doesn't make us less of a Christian!  

Therapy is a part of medicine.  Just as our arms, legs, and other body parts can benefit from physical therapy, our brain is no different.     

Despite ongoing misperceptions within Christianity, many forms of therapy are in alignment with God’s Word.  Like all types of medicine, no physician, practitioner, or therapist is perfect.  As in all things, Christians are encouraged to lean first on God’s grace and truth for wisdom, joy, and strength in the midst of all circumstances. 

Pride and legalism (adding unnecessary rules and burdens to God’s Word) are often reasons why believers forgo mental health treatment.  Jesus’ interaction with the Pharisees teaches us that pride and legalism can become stumbling blocks to God’s grace.  The field of medicine isn’t perfect, but I (Travis here) have witnessed through my life how God can demonstrate His grace by providing much-needed mental health medication and treatment.

As God healed all of the wounds in my life, I realized that I wasn’t alone.  Mental illness is real and there are millions of Christians just like me.  Just like YOU! ADHD alone accounts for 8.6% of the world’s population, and most of it goes untreated. By accepting and embracing mental illness in light of God's grace and truth, we can heal as a Church and God will bring REVIVAL to the world.
